To help you out, our experts have listed five steps to take.

STEP 1: Safety Inspection

Before getting your hands dirty, you need to check for hidden hazards lurking beneath the water. Depending on the dangers found, you may have to call in the cavalry – regardless of your cover!

Put your tools on the ground, step away from your basement, and call a reliable restoration company ASAP if:

• There is microorganism contamination water (order a test kit from a Public Health Unit)
• Any exposed wires or electrical outlets are submerged or vulnerable
• The structure is sagging ominously
• Sewage is stinking up the place

If the water is too deep to see any hazards, don’t assume they’re absent – this mistake can be fatal, especially when it comes to electrocution!

To avoid wading into hidden hazards, you will need to call a water damage specialist before you can get to work safely.

If the water is shallow and without any hazards, move on to Step 2.

STEP 2: Pump Out The Puddles

First, remove any movable belongings from your basement to prevent further water damage as fast (and as safe) as possible.

Then, use a strong pump to pump out as much water as possible. Once the water is too shallow to pump, get your hands on a wet and dry vacuum to remove the remaining water.

STEP 3: Pull Out The Padding

Without the specialist tools and tactics, drying carpet padding will be a disaster!

For DIY-jobs, the electricity bills and grey hairs aren’t worth it. In this case, it’s easier and cheaper to pull out the padding instead.

And if sewage is involved, removal is your only option!

Gently pull up a piece of your carpet using needle-nose pliers from each corner. Keep pulling it back until you’re able to cut out all of the saturated paddings.

STEP 4: Disinfect

Using a pump sprayer and bleach – as well as the recommended disinfectant dilution ratios – spray the mixture onto every hard surface.

Then, use pine oil to disinfect all non-porous belongings to prevent mold growth.

STEP 5: Dehumidify

Finally, you need to remove the moisture from the air.

Air movers pull moisture out of your drywall, wood, and other porous materials and into the air. Dehumidifiers will draw this moist air in, allowing it to condense on its coils and be collected, drying out the air.

However, it’s harder than it sounds.

If there’s too much air movement and not enough dehumidifying, you can cause more damage from high humidity. Think warped doors, damp books, peeling wallpaper, and rusting metals.

But, if there’s too little air movement, drying is prolonged and the remaining water will continue to damage, rot, and warp its victims!

Unless you have the experience, equipment, safety gear, and a helping hand (or two!), buying the equipment, hiring electrical safety services, removing damaged debris, and buying new carpets add up quickly – especially if unsuccessful the first time.
